automatically after 1 minute.
4.2. Changing the alarm and temperature reading time
The device is ready for a
temperature reading ±3 hours before and after the time of the previous temperature reading. If
you choose an alarm time outside these 6 hours, the temperature measuring time is adjusted to ±3
hours in relationship to the new alarm time. This involves activating the alarm.
5. Taking your temperature, general information
Taking the basal body temperature reliably, every day, is one of the key elements of our
system. The basal body temperature is the temperature of the body just after waking up and before getting
out of bed or becoming active in any way. The more regularly that you take your temperature,
particularly at the beginning, the faster the device gets to know your personal cycle.
- Place the thermometer under the tongue, right at the back, either to the left or the right of
the frenulum with the mouth closed.
5.1 Temperature reading time limit
You can only take a temperature reading once a day and within the temperature reading time limit.
The alarm must be activated before the first temperature reading.
Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp controls the temperature reading time limit. It comprises 6 hours, beginning
and ending three hours before and after the alarm time, or ±3 hours in relationship to the
previous temperature reading time if this differs from the alarm time.
The thermometer symbol remains illuminated throughout the temperature reading time limit.
- Normally the alarm time and the temperature reading time are both the same. We recommend that
you allow Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp to wake you up.
- If you wake up within the temperature reading time limit (e.g. to look after your child), take
your temperature.
- If you get up late and the time limit is over, there is no reading for that day.
- If there is no temperature reading for one day, the time limit is left open.
5.2. Taking your temperature
From the time display:
- The thermometer symbol is illuminated. It is ready for a temperature reading.
- Place the thermometer under your tongue, right at the back, either to the left or to the
right of the frenulum.
- To take your temperature, press any button. The thermometer symbol flashes.
- The display shows temperature readings of 35.20 to 37.59 degrees. When the reading is
completed (approx. 30 seconds), you will hear an acoustic signal and the temperature reading appears on the
display.
- If the temperature reading is interrupted, e.g. because the mouth is opened, the reading time is
automatically extended. The temperature reading flashes to indicate an interruption.
- If the reading indicates that the temperature is too high (over 37.59), an "F" for
fever appears on the display.
- If you do not want to take your temperature or you want to interrupt the reading, you can stop the
reading by pressing the minus and plus buttons simultaneously. You will hear an acoustic signal. The
device stops the reading. There is no temperature reading for this day.
- The tip of the thermometer can be cleaned using warm water. Occasional cleaning is recommended.
6. Menstruation data
You enter "M" on the days that you have "M". However, this should
be on at least three consecutive days.
6.1. At the beginning
In the event that the "M" (menstruation) symbol flashes after the temperature reading:
- If you are menstruating, press the plus button, "M" remains constantly illuminated.
- If you are not menstruating, press the minus button. "M" disappears from the display.
An acoustic signal confirms the input. The day of the cycle alternates in the display.
6.2. After using the device for some time
When Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp knows your cycle, the device only asks about "M" when
menstruation is expected. It begins to ask ("M" flashes) 2 days before. When "M" is finished,
Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp stops asking "M" each day.
The first bleeding after stopping the pill is not menstruation but is caused by the withdrawal of
the medication. Do not enter "M" for this bleeding.
6.3. Activating "M"
If you have "M" on a day that Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp does not ask for "M"
please activate "M" yourself. From the time display:
- Press the round button. You see today's temperature reading with the fertility report.
- Press and hold the round button for 5 seconds.
- Enter "M" by pressing the plus button.
The following days Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp will ask "M" automatically.
6.4. Correcting "M"
Incorrect "M" data can be corrected. From the time display:
- Press the round button once.
- If you want to correct the "M" data for the previous day, press the minus button. The
date of the previous day appears on the display enabling you to enter or cancel "M".
- Press and hold the round button for 5 seconds. "M" flashes.
- Say no with the minus button.
- Say yes with the plus button.
6.5 Entering "M" at a later time
If you have not taken a temperature reading for some time (e.g. on holiday), but have menstruated
during this time, you can enter this at a later time.
- Go back to the desired date using the minus button.
- Activate "M", as indicated in point 6.3.
It is only necessary to enter the first "M" day. The device automatically records the
following two days.
7. Fertility display
Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp supplies information concerning fertility on every day of the cycle by
using coloured LED's.
- red = fertile
- yellow = learning, ovulation late
- green = infertile
The number of green days slowly increases as the computer learns your cycle.
Yellow is only seldom displayed. If the device does not receive any data for a long
period of time or receives information that it cannot evaluate, the number of yellow
days increases again.
The reliability of a method of contraception is expressed for medical purposes by the
Pearl Index. The Pearl Index indicates how many unwanted pregnancies occur in 100 user years while
using a specific means of contraception. A contraceptive pill with a Pearl Index of 1 means that if
100 women use this pill for contraception for one year, one woman will get pregnant in this time.
In general, Pearl-Index rates are as follows:
- pill: 0.5-1.0
- IUD: 1-3
- condom 5-15
Right from the beginning, the reliability of Lady-Comp is 0.7 on the Pearl Index.
This score comes from the test results collected from 686 women from three countries over a
period of two years.
8. Red LED flashes (2 days)
A flashing red LED indicates the optimum time for fertilization. This means that the device
expects ovulation in 1 to 2 days and sexual
intercourse on this day is most likely to be successful. This prognosis becomes more and
more accurate from cycle to cycle.
9. Potential fertility display
From the time display:
- Press the round button once.
- Press the plus button once to gain access to the potential fertility display.
- Press the plus button several times to see the expected fertility of the following 6 days.
Every prediction is a statement of probability. The
actual level of fertility for the day for which the prognosis is made is shown on the day itself.
This means that the prognosis for four days from now may be "green", but if ovulation is
late and you are still fertile, the display will show "red" on day 4.
10. Monophases
If there is no ovulation in a cycle, Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp indicates this to you. When this is
the case, the device stays on "red" or, if ovulation is late, it changes to
"yellow" until "M" begins.
Monophase cycles can occur up to 20% of the time. If the proportion of monophases is
higher, we can provide you with a printout of your cycle to discuss with your gynecologist.
Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp printouts can help to diagnose insufficient production of gestagen (CLI).
Please note that when you stop taking the pill, it takes some time before ovulation occurs again and you
return to your own cycle.
If you would like to have more information concerning this subject, please
contact us.
11. Data from previous cycles (menstruation data)
If you have information about your cycle, you can enter this data into the device before the
first temperature reading. Activate "M" as explained on under point 6.5.
It is possible to enter "M" data for up to nine previous, consecutive cycles. For each cycle, it
is only necessary to enter the first "M" day, the device automatically saves three days.
12. Back in operation after an interruption
The date, the year and the time continue to function automatically without connection to
electricity or battery. If no temperatures are taken, the temperature reading time limit is left
open and must be reset. This involves setting the alarm for the next morning and continuing in the usual way.
To enter "M" data at any time, proceed from the time display:
- Press the round button once.
- Press the minus button once. The date appears.
- Press the minus button or press and hold until you reach the date for which you want to enter your first
"M" day (beginning of cycle).
- Now press and hold the round button for 5 seconds. The date remains constantly illuminated and
"M" flashes.

13. Test mode
Lady-Comp, Baby-Comp, and Pearly provide a function to check the display and all
operations of the device, including illumination of the numerical display, the lights that
illuminate symbols, and the thermometer sensor.
To access test mode, proceed from the time display:
- For Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp, press the plus button 3 times. For Pearly, while displaying
the time and date, press and hold the (+) plus button until the device starts testing the LCD display.
- The device now runs through all its symbols independently. The device tests itself and
indicates this in the display window. When the test is completed the time appears and the
thermometer symbol is illuminated.
- If you now press the round button, the thermometer flashes and is ready for a reading.
- You can now take a test temperature if you wish. Test temperatures are not recorded to
memory; it only checks the sensor's function. To interrupt a reading or to leave the test mode,
press the minus and plus buttons simultaneously and you will be returned to the time.
14. Deleting memorized data
To erase data from devices sold prior to April 2004, proceed with the instructions below from the time
display. For devices sold on or after April 2004, procceed with the directions after entering the test mode.
(See 13. Test mode)
- Press and hold the round button, the minus button, and plus button simultaneously. Hold for 5 seconds.
- If the display becomes lighter or darker while you are trying to cancel data, this means that you
did not press the plus and minus buttons simultaneously.
- If the display is turned off, this again means that you did not press the plus and minus buttons
simultaneously. Please start again from the beginning.
- An "L" appears on the display panel, with a "9" on the right (eg. "L-09" or "L--9"). Let go of the buttons.
- You must count down this "9" to zero by pressing the minus button 9 times. The
cancellation process is interrupted if you touch any other button.
- Cancellation takes place automatically at zero. There is an acoustic signal. Then the current
time appears on the display.
This method makes it impossible to delete memorized data by mistake. After deleting the data, the
device returns to factory mode and will display the sample values (e.g. temperature 36.65 or 97.97).
After the first temperature reading, the sample data is automatically removed again.
15. Analysis of the cycle
Proceeding from the time display:
- Press the round button once and the temperature reading of the day appears. This display
alternates with the current day of the cycle.
- Press the minus button once. The date of the previous day appears. This display alternates
with the temperature reading of the day in question.
- The minus button enables you to go back.
- The plus button enables you to go forward.
You can recall all the previous temperature readings for up to 150 days by pressing the minus
button again and again. If you do not press any button for 30 seconds or when you press
the plus and the minus button simultaneously, the recall process stops.
16. Print-out and evaluation
In the event of difficulties with your cycle or conception, a printout and evaluation can
usually provide valuable information for you and your gynecologist, e.g. concerning the
follicle phase, ovulation, the luteal phase, and pregnancy. If you are interested in
receiving a detailed analysis of your cycle and a print-out of the data
stored in the device, please contact us to make arrangements.
17. Pregnancy display
Lady-Comp indicates a probable pregnancy on the 15th day after conception by the simultaneous
flashing of the red, yellow and green indicators.
The pregnancy is confirmed from the 18th day following fertilization by the simultaneous constant
illumination of the red, yellow and green indicators.
18. Battery operation
For Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp devices purchased prior to April 2004, you can operate on battery power
by placing 8 AA cells in your battery pack. On devices purchased on or after April 2004, there is
now a built-in rechargable battery. It automatically recharges over 48 hours when you plug it in
using the wall plug supplied with it.
All the operations available while the device is plugged into to a wall plug, are also
possible while using batteries as power source. If no button is pressed while operating on batteries,
Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp automatically turns itself off after 15 - 30 seconds. The display remains off
and only lights up when the alarm wakes you up or if you press a button to turn it on.
If, when using batteries on older devices, the display shows "BA-", then it is time to change
the batteries. (For best performance, we recommend changing batteries after 3 weeks.) On newer
models, "BA-" means it is time to recharge the internal battery for 48 hours. (We recommend
leaving the device plugged in at all times on your night table while at home. This will insure
full power if you travel on short notice.)
19. Power supply
Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp comes with a universal power adapter. The adapter includes an insert for
your local configuration that we supply based on the delivery address. Since the new Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp
comes with a built in battery that lasts 3 weeks on a full charge, inserts for other countries you
may visit while traveling are only needed if you will be away for more then 3 weeks.
20. No risk of loss of data
In the event of a power cut, flat batteries or when changing batteries, there is absolutely no
risk of losing the data memorised in the Lady-Comp/Baby-Comp or the data concerning menstrual
cycles.
21. Changing display brightness
Any change of brightness to the display applies only to the "stand by" time display. When you
begin to use the device, the display shows the normal full degree of brightness and is then
reduced to the desired level when the device enters "stand by".
To set stand by brightness levels, proceed from the time display:
- Press and hold the round button.
- Press the plus button to brighten the display.
- Press the minus button to darken the display.
The display gets darker if you are doing something wrong.
The display can also be completely turned off in stand by mode, by adjusting the dim level.
This setting can be achieved by pressing the minus button repeatedly until you hear an acoustic
signal. The device now functions as if it were using battery power, even if it is plugged
directly in to the wall.

24. Pregnancy planning
Baby-Comp shows you the optimum time for you to get pregnant.
You can see the optimum days to get pregnant flashing in the display window on the first
days of a new cycle. Just two days per cycle are considered to be optimum. These days have no
significance for the sex of the offspring and so the "boy" and "girl" symbols flash
together with the date.
- In order to plan for a boy, only have intercourse on the day on which just the "boy"
symbol is shown. The "boy" symbol lights up one day before the first optimum conception day.
- If your preference is for a girl, only have intercourse on the day on which just the
"girl" symbol is shown. The "girl" symbol lights up one day after the second optimum conception day.
Proceeding from the time display:
- Press the round button twice. The current date appears on the display.
- Press the minus button and you will see the optimum conception date and gender
preference, along with the "sperm" symbol.
- Then press the plus button twice and you will see the predicted date of birth and
gender prognosis, along with the "baby" symbol.
Attention: Before ovulation, the dates and symbols flash. After ovulation, they are constantly
illuminated. If no prediction is possible, "--:--" appears on the display.
25. Gender prognosis
During a possible or confirmed pregnancy, Baby-Comp indicates whether you can expect to
have a boy or a girl. This is on condition that you entered SI input on the morning after
intercourse. Both the boy and girl symbol will appear if intercourse took place on days on which
it is equally likely for a boy or a girl to be conceived. This also applies if no SI was entered.
Proceeding from the time display:
- Press the round button twice. The current date appears on the display.
- Press the minus button and you will see the conception date with the symbols
"boy" and/or "girl" and the sperm symbol.
- Press the plus button twice and you will see the estimated date of birth with
the symbols "boy" and/or "girl" and the birth symbol.
26. "SI" input
If you are planning a pregnancy and are interested in having a gender prognosis, inform Baby-Comp
when sexual intercourse (SI) took place. Enter "SI" data the following morning after taking a
temperature reading.
Proceeding from the time display:
- Press the round button twice to get into the planning level.
- Press and hold the round button for 5 seconds. The "SI" symbol flashes.
- Say yes for "SI" by pressing the plus button. The "SI"
symbol remains constantly illuminated.
- Say no for "SI" by pressing the minus button. The "SI" symbol stops flashing.
- An acoustic signal confirms the input.
If the device has received "SI" information, it indicates on the fertile days whether
there is more likelihood of conceiving a girl or a boy in the event of fertilization.
(See 24. Pregnancy planning)
27. Correcting "SI" input
If you want to cancel incorrect "SI" input, you must do this on the same day.
(See 26. "SI" input, but press the minus button to say no "SI" input.)
28. Pregnancy display
Baby-Comp distinguishes between three pregnancy stages:
- Possible pregnancy after 4-5 days. Red, yellow and green alternate individually. (if SI data has been entered).
- Probable pregnancy after 15 days. Red, yellow and green flash simultaneously.
- Confirmed pregnancy after 18 days. Red, yellow and green are constantly illuminated.
Baby-Comp indicates a possible pregnancy by the 4th-5th day after fertilisation. This very
early indication can be made when SI (sexual intercourse) data has been entered on the following
morning after the temperature reading and a possible pregnancy could be calculated. The fertility
symbols red, yellow and green alternate.
After the fifteenth day Baby-Comp automatically indicates a "probable pregnancy".
The fertility symbols red, yellow and green flash.
If the likelihood of pregnancy is confirmed, there is a further display from the 18th day after
fertilisation. All three colours are constantly illuminated.
The conception and birth date can be called up onto the display via the
planning level. (See 29. Conception date and birth date)
(For gender prognosis, see 25. Gender prognosis)
29. Conception date and birth date
After ovulation has been recognised, Baby-Comp indicates the possible conception and birth
dates in the planning level. These displays can be called up whether a pregnancy has taken
place or not. Proceeding from the time display:
- Press the round button twice. The current date appears on the display.
- Press the minus button and the date of conception appears.
- Press the plus button twice and the estimated date of birth appears.
Attention: Before ovulation, the dates and symbols flash. After ovulation, they are constantly
illuminated. If no prediction is possible, "--:--" appears on the display.
30. Pregnancy confirmation
In the event of a confirmed pregnancy, the conception date and the date of birth remain constantly
illuminated. We recommend that you continue to take temperature readings
every morning during the first months. Baby-Comp keeps an eye on the development of the early pregnancy.
Now is the time to make an appointment with your gynaecologist.
31. Back in operation after pregnancy
The risk of becoming pregnant during the first six months after giving birth is low (2%)
provided that you are fully and frequently breast-feeding your baby.
After this and in all other cases, we recommend you to recommence temperature readings 6 weeks
after the birth or even earlier. At first Baby-Comp shows "yellow". Slight fluctuations
in temperature indicate that the normal cycle is reestablishing itself. Baby-Comp begins to show
the usual fertility display.
